A Little Well Known Australian Classic

The Interview - A powerful police drama/thriller made in Australia with an Australian cast and director. Made in 1998, was a moderate theatrical success and winner of 3 AFI (Australian Film Institute) Awards in 1998, including Best Film, Best Original Screenplay and Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role.

Many of the actors are easily recognizable by Australians, yet international viewers will recognize, Hugo Weaving whom in the last few years has played Agent Smith from the Matrix Movies, Elrond from the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy and as Detective Abberline in The Wolfman.

The Plot

Eddie Fleming (Weaving) a shy, quiet and nervous type of individual has lost his job and his family, is accosted early one morning, by two who claim to be police officers Det. Sgt. John Steele (Martin) & Det. Sr. Const. Wayne Prior (Jeffrey) for the suspected theft of a car.

Taken to an interview room, Eddie is frequently put under intense pressure and Steele is also possibly under review by Internal Affairs. Tempers flair and as the truth slowly starts to unravel, especially as Eddie is now also a suspect for murder and agendas start to come to the fore.

Why This Is A Great Australian Classic

Over the last few decades, as Australian films are most often hard to become produced, as well as most of our talent working overseas and most films are not often made locally.

This film was made on a shoestring budget, exemplifies critical acting through revealing the story and characters slowly amidst a psychological, and very intensive interview of cat and mouse, that keeps you guessing who is either the good guy, or the bad guy, and is absolutely riveting until the end.

With everyone not quite clear cut as to whom these people are in being intent on good or bad deeds all parties concerned seem to have an agenda or hidden motives.

HI KJ,

I saw this film a long time ago so can't recall too many details about it but I do remember it was atmospheric...even a bit Kafkaesque. Maybe I'll get it out on video now that you've reminded me of it...Hugo Weaving is so good.

Cheers

Nice review - I had no idea Hugo Weaving was born in Nigeria. He has built up a body of strong work. Proof is my favorite I think.

I can think of 4 Australian movies I've seen, At least they were filmed in Australia.

Kangaroo Jack, Crocodile Dundee, Quiqly down under, and Body Melt. A rather Eclectic selection.
