Video Game Sequels. Why make a sequel?

More money for an existing IP (Intellectual Property) for a game company? Perhaps it is an established game or series of games so having a sequel is a safe bet. It all makes sense, gamers will buy from a series more often than from an original game.

Other times, game developers feel it is to make a better game, version one was a gamble, it was well received, well liked and sold millions. They feel like they let the fans down (the fans may or may not agree) so they provide a game, version II, better game play, deeper story, new areas, characters or more monsters to explore, enriched graphics.

Or, it is even the dreaded fatal mistake of the original number one release was such a shocker, version 2 could not be any worse........for sure.......

Herein lies a swag of well liked, well played and well respected sequels to some major IP game series. Here are games that are much improved, or much better, or just simply a new release thats not here to replace an original, but to extend it.

The choice is relatively easy or downright hard depending on why you would want to purchase version 2 of a previously made (and possibly best selling) game.

Take Starcraft from Blizzard for example. They came back to this only as they had so many staff working on other IP games, like WOW and Diablo III. Starcraft 2 even though almost a full decade later, still became as much a monster hit as the original.

Consider also, several titles that seem to get bigger with each sequel release. Battlefield 3 & Call Of Duty 3: Modern Warfare are two of the biggest selling games ever, and they are sequels of existing and extremely popular Intellectual Properties on the game market in 2011 and beyond.

Some come back to life due to the game IP being picked up by other gaming studios and they may prefer to do a sequel rather than a remake, Duke Nukem Forever is a case in point and it seems it will finally see the light of day, and may finally remove the hint of vapourware it nearly became after the demise of 3D realms.

However one sees it, its an opportunity for game studios to improve on what was before, or they may stay clear from it if it become a horrible shocker and not sell well.
