Dungeons And Dragons Starter Kit - Where To Start

For those that have most likely purchased previously the 3 Core rule books for Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition and found the reading rather overwhelming, I recommend purchasing the following (*details further down the page) to help you grasp, firstly, role playing games in general, and secondly, Dungeons and Dragons.

The books have a wealth and a vast amount of detail to absorb, especially if one has not played an interactive, group play, role playing game previously, which is about every kid under the age of 28, worldwide (That XBOX / PLAYSTATION / NINTENDO generation).

A More Straight Forward Approach

A game for 1 - 5 players. Everything is in the box to help you and your friends to start playing.

There is a book for players and help on creating a hero by choosing a race and a profession. There is also a book for a games controller or games master, known in this game as the DM, the Dungeon Master with advice on running the game and adventure content. 2 Sheets of die-cut tokens, representing character players and monsters they may encounter. Cardstock character sheets and power cards (player abilities). A large sheet of a double sided pictured dungeon map and 6 polyhedral dice.

All of these items will help everyone get through playing and understanding the game step by step.

An Introduction To Role Play Games

You have seen Lord Of The Rings, Clash Of The Titans, the 13th Warrior & Conan The Barbarian films. Like these films of daring and adventure, Interactive Fantasy Role Playing Games allow you and a group of friends decide the fate and destiny of a character hero YOU control.

Each of your friends represents possibilities of an exploring Elf out to discover whats outside of home, a Knight on a quest to test his mettle, a Dwarf seeking vengeance for a wrong doing, a thief out for personal gain, and mage looking for that ultimate spell, a cleric out to spread their gospel and a monk adventuring to fulfill a vision-quest. All together, you form an adventuring party who have personal agendas yet also must band together as fate has decreed. Will you all save a small town from bandits? Delve into dungeons looking for lost treasure? Find an antidote for a poisoned Princess who has less than a week to live?

The Dungeon Master is the party's narrator, and represents all that you see, hear, smell, touch, taste and interact with. The DM is also all others you encounter, whether that be friend or foe. The DM is totally neutral, favoring neither adventures or monsters.

So What Is Next?

Once you have played through this game more than several times, you will feel comfortable and confident to progress further. Now on to the core books and supplements that you will acquire over time.  So what does one do with this copy of the starter game?

  • Sell it on Craig's List or eBay
  • Give it to your younger siblings to introduce them to role playing games
  • Have it as a keepsake and test out new ways to play the solo adventure from time to time.

This is a game that gets into your blood and it is very enjoyable. After 25 years even though he and I haven't played it in ages, an old friend of mine still says 'As the DM I rolled a d20 and you won't like the outcome......' .

I still miss a goblin bash or two.

This Is A Great Way To Introduce A Great Game

Ah good times! D&D has become more fun than going to a pub and getting wasted for me! So much more intellectually challenging than playing "finish the beer"

Just wrote an article on it myself ;)

I got this box for Christmas when WOTC re-released the Red Box. A little too "crunchy" for my group of board gamers, but it's a great (and affordable) way to try out D&D 4E.
